Speech by Blanca Luz Castellanos
Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is my great honor to address you on behalf of the family of Colonel Jose Arturo Castellanos Contreras; his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. I wish to express my gratitude to the President of this Temple, and to its members, who have organized and made this beautiful tribute to the memory of our father who in order to rescue thousands of our brother Jews, and without the authorization of the Government of the Republic of El Salvador, named as the First Secretary of the Consulate in Switzerland, Mr. George Mandell-Mantello, a Romanian Jew, a position that did not exist in any other Consulate of El Salvador, but which he created, firstly to give Jewish families Salvadoran visas enabling them to gain freedom and rescue from the barbarity of the Nazis, and then to continue the rescue by issuing Certificates of Salvadoran citizenship, saving the lives of thousands of Jewish families. My father and Mr. George Mandell-Mantello met in Czechoslovakia in 1937 and reconnected years later in the city of Geneva, Switzerland and began the mission with the rescue of a family friend.
All the affection and gratitude we have received have overwhelmed us with emotion. We wish our father were still alive to receive these honors but are comforted by this great harvest of blessings from so many people because of the seeds he planted sixty-five years ago. I think that, like my father, Mr. George Mantello should also be named ”Righteous among the Nations” but, according to Yad Vashem, this is an honor conferred only upon non-Jews.

Senores y Senoras,
Es para mi un gran honor dirigirme a ustedes en nombre de la familia del Coronel Jose Arturo Castellanos Contreras, especialmente se sus hijos, nietos, biznietos y tatarnanietos. Para expresar nuestro agradecimiento al Sr. Presidente de este Tempo asi comi al resto de miembros del mismo. Por haber organizado y realizado este lindo homenaje a la memoria de nuestro querido padre quien para rescatar a miles de nuestros hermanos judios sin la autorizacion del gobierno de la Republica de El Salvador nombro primer secretario del consulado de El Salvador en Suiza, al Sr. George Mandell-Mantello, (Judio Rumano), plaza que no existia en ningun consulado de El Salvador, a el y a su familia les ortorgo visas Salvadorenas y fueron los primeros que rescato de la barbarie de los Nazis, luego decidieron continuar el recate extendiendo certificados de nacionalidad Salvadorena que salvaron miles de familias judias. Mi padre y el Senor George Mandell-Mantello, se conocieron en Chequeslovaquia en el ano 1937 y despues de muchos anos se re-encontraron en la ciudad de Ginebra, Suiza, o sea que este rescate comenzo con el rescate de un amigo y su familia.
Todos la muestras de carino y agradecimiento que hemos recibido nos emocionan pero tambien nos embarga el sentimiento pues nos apena que nuestro padre no haya recibido estos honores en vida. Ahora tenemos el Consuelo de que estamos cosechando todo lo bueno que el sembro hace mas de 65 anos, como las bendiciones de muchas personas. Tambien pensamos que el Sr. George Mantello era digno de recibir tambien el titulo de “Justo de la Naciones”, pero segun los reglamentos del Yad Vashem papr recibir este honor no debe la persona ser judia.
